Incapacity royal fee advised of merciless prisoner mistreatment
A royal fee has heard vivid descriptions of how abuse is rampant amongst individuals with disabilities in detention and jail.
The mistreatment and lack of integration with the Nationwide Incapacity Insurance coverage Scheme (NDIS) meant individuals weren’t supported in jail or when launched and had been extra prone to re-offend, consultants advised the fee.
Jail and detention are costly, costing taxpayers billions. Mistreatment and the usage of solitary confinement, consultants allege, breaches worldwide human rights legal guidelines and trigger lifelong trauma to these leaving the system, hindering them from reintegrating into society.
